Large scale air exercises like Red Flag rely on agressor sqadrons to act as the „bad guys“ to give local and visiting pilots the maximum learning experience. Until recently Nellis AFB was home to two of such units. The 65th AGRS was flying the F-15C air superiority fighter and the 64th AGRS the lighter F-16C. Unfortunately 65th AGRS was disbanded in 2014 but luckily some of the remaining F-15´s continue to fly with the 64th until early 2015. To underline the adversary role all jets are painted in various paint schemes similar to those of potential enemies.
Occasionally the local squadrons get support from Navy F-16Ns normally based at NAS Fallon in northern Nevada.
